Viking Ocean Cruises Ships, Destinations, Dining & More 2023

viking ocean cruise reviews

I am just back from my first Viking voyage, a 12-night cruise on Viking Sea,. In this review, I will share various aspects of the Viking experience, specifically a Viking Sea cruise ship review, to provide insights into what you can expect on this ship. I hope sharing this Viking Ocean cruises review will help you decide on your next adventure. Passengers on Viking Sea are well traveled and seek new experiences.

Viking Ocean Cruises Review: Conclusion

That's something that even the most upscale of Viking's ocean cruise rivals including Oceania Cruises, Azamara, Seabourn, Silversea Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises can't say. In closing, it was great to again be aboard one of their ocean cruises. Next, we’re looking forward to sampling Viking’s new river ships on the Mississippi and one of their new expedition ships on the Great Lakes. Unlike most other cruise lines, Viking Ocean Cruises offers house wines and beers along with soft drinks complimentary with lunch and dinner.

Cruises

They’re a marked departure from the other Viking ocean ships. The ocean cruise brand now has eight ships in this class, with another (Viking Saturn) debuting in 2023. Also included in your cruise rate is the use of the fitness center, which offers excellent views and plenty of brand-new machines and weights. For an additional cost ($10), you can sign up for group classes like Pilates. Treatment prices at the spa are in line with what you’d find at a high-end spa or luxury hotel, though discounts were available on certain days. There’s also a salon onboard offering blowouts, manicures, and pedicures.

Where does Viking Sea sail to?

The cost of the cruise, considering the inclusions and amenities, is competitive in the cruise industry. With the cruise cost including full use of the spa, the entertainment, and wine, beer and soft drinks at lunch and dinner, we felt that we got excellent value for our money. A cruise on Viking Sea focuses heavily on destinations, and passengers are entitled to one included excursion in each port the ship visits. Upgraded "premium" excursions also are offered and are excellent, but many passengers are content with the included option. Viking provides local guides who speak English and know the regions well. Onboard programming complements the excursions; lectures focus on port history and culture.

Guests, many repeat, also like the design of the Viking ships. We’re given complimentary bottles of water when leaving the ship and iced facecloths when we return. “Well, there goes that idea,” moans one of our fellow guests, dressed for sunny safari weather, camera at the ready.

The pools

On Viking Jupiter, you’ll find modern, clean, and brand-new cabins. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, ample closet space with built-in shelves, bathrobes, safes, a small seating area, and a desk with a pop-up vanity. Rooms are serviced twice per day, and a room steward is on duty.

Which Viking cruise ship is the best?

We had some frustrations with guest services not following up on requests for post-cruise plans. Our charter flight was scheduled to leave at 6 pm from Manaus so we hoped to use that day to see more of the city and surroundings on a private tour. But three days before we arrived in Manaus, guest services still had no idea what time we’d be disembarking, what hotel we would be brought to, and when we needed to get to the airport.

Walking on the promenade deck

So we tried out the warm, swim-against-the-current pool (with underwater massage roller beds), heated stone loungers, sauna, steam room and hot whirlpools. By this time, we were starting to appreciate the “no nickel-and-diming” philosophy onboard. So on our first cruise, it took us a while to figure out that the Viking Star spa is free (except for massages and spa treatments, of course).

Compare that to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class ships which can each carry over 5,000 passengers! There won’t be any children onboard either — all guests must be at least 18 years old. You’ll also notice the absence of many traditional cruise line features like art auctions, casinos, waterslides, and photography setups. Many of the credit card offers that appear on this site are from credit card companies from which we receive financial compensation. This compensation may impact how and where products appear on this site (including, for example, the order in which they appear).

In each port, passengers (who were divided into smaller groups) were treated to a complimentary shore excursion. For example, one day on the Viking Star cruise ship, there was a memorable Scandinavian seafood lunch, followed by made-to-order waffles, berries and cream for dessert. Measuring 280 square feet, they’re bigger than the Veranda and Deluxe Veranda staterooms.

Like many guests, one of our favorite ways to keep reasonably fit on a cruise is to walk around the deck when at sea. For dinner, we especially loved Manfredi’s, one of two specialty restaurants onboard. There are several dining options onboard, and the dress code is elegant casual at night (no formal nights). On both the Viking Star and Viking Sea, we never felt the urge to try local restaurants ashore – the ship’s food was that good. The Penthouse Verandas also come with perks like priority restaurant and shore excursion reservations. The Viking Star and its sister vessels offer a long list of free inclusions that usually aren’t offered by other cruise lines.

Tips of first-time Viking cruisers

As noted above, Viking doesn't allow passengers under the age of 18 on its ships — a key differentiator for the brand as compared to other cruise lines. They're also people who can afford a relatively high-end vacation experience. While Viking doesn't market itself as a luxury line, some would call it that. Viking vessels are full of luxury touches, with the pricing to match (see more on what Viking trips cost at the bottom of this story).

Their talks on NATO and Russia in the Baltic, as well as the EU’s refugee migration policy, were thought-provoking, to say the least. We even got to splash around in the second glass infinity pool, suspended at the stern’s edge – it felt like we could swim right off into the sea. We lucked out with unexpectedly warm weather on our September cruise on the Viking Star, and the pool roof was open much of the time. ” asked a fellow guest when we gingerly padded barefoot into the spa the first time.

Unlike many lines, Viking allows you to bring your own wine, Champagne, beer and liquor onto ships at embarkation with no limits. You'll also find live piano music in the evenings in river ship lounges. In general, you'll find a lot of couples on Viking ships and some solo travelers.

In the case of the Viking cruises which seem to leave ports earlier than most cruise lines we’ve used, the design is paramount. Viking Ocean ships are designed with elegance and functionality in mind. Embarking on a Viking Oceans cruise promises a luxurious and immersive journey.

When Viking learned of our difficult day, they issued us a future cruise credit. Unnecessary as it was not Viking’s fault, but we were impressed and appreciative. On the Aquavit Terrace at the rear of the ship there is an infinity pool and hot tub. Lovely refreshing water with enough space for several bathers.

There are also two small exhibit areas featuring Viking clothing and artifacts. Viking hosts a daily series, “Munch Moments,” which showcases several Edvard Munch pieces each afternoon in The Living Room/Atrium area. You can also download a specific app that walks you through the art and design onboard. Don’t miss out on guest lecturers, port talks, streamed TED Talks, destination performances, film screenings, and more onboard. There is also an onboard cooking school, The Kitchen Table, where on sea days, you can learn to cook dishes highlighting an upcoming destination.

Our other review of the Viking Star is based on our first Viking cruise, a 14-day northern European voyage (Viking Homelands cruise). Instead, they are eminently functional, with storage in all the right places, lots of outlets for charging your devices and lighting right where you need it. We love the reading lights built into the fabric headboards of beds, which come in addition to the lamps on bedside tables. You won't have trouble seeing the pages of the Viking Daily activity newsletter while lying in a Viking cabin bed. Bathrooms in Viking cabins are serene, modernist escapes with luxurious travertine marble-lined walls; Scandinavian-influenced, wood-veneered vanities; shiny white sinks; and chrome fixtures.

Soothing, minimalist colors — think creams, grays and lighter blues — are the order of the day. Post Covid, there are also fewer guides available for all types of excursions. Most were forced to seek other employment during the pandemic, and not all of them are rushing back to the hospitality industry. It seems, after Covid,  roll calls are not full of folks wanting or offering to organize private excursions. But  now I do not want to  have to figure out all their promos, categories, up charges ,not interested in their large ships etc.

All of Viking ships are similar, so if you’ve been on one before, you’ll be right at home. Viking also offers smaller versions of its Longships that have fewer balcony cabins, as well as a few different types of river ships with varying numbers of balcony cabins. Complimentary shore excursions are rare on ocean cruises, unless they’re expedition-oriented.

A Dance Show on a Cruise Ship? Its Not What You Think The New York Times

Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or have two left feet, these classes will have you grooving to the rhythm in no time. We’ll guide you through the steps of signing up, highlight the different styles of dance you can learn, and even share some insider tips for getting the most out of your dance experience onboard. So, grab your dancing shoes and let’s hit the dance floor for a cruise vacation like no other. Finally, Bolero's is a staple on 15 Royal Caribbean cruise ships; it's also the place to order a mojito or margarita. Yet avid Latin dancers might not need that liquid courage to take to the dance floor when live bands perform salsa, meringue and other Latin music before and after dinner. If you love the vibe but are a novice when it comes to Latin styling, look for salsa dance classes listed in your daily onboard newsletter so you can get a lesson by day and strut your staff late that night.

Practice Sessions Outside of Class Hours

On formal nights, such as the Royal Night Themed Balls, you were likely to see most gentlemen in tuxedos whirling their partners around the dance floor, with ladies choosing long ball gowns for the occasion. This is serious dancing at its best and if, like me you are more of a spectator, it was a real treat. In 2017, the UK-based Fred Olsen Cruise Line offered the company's first-ever Mardi Gras cruise as part of an epic travel adventure to ports in the Caribbean, North and Central America leaving roundtrip from the UK.

Comfortable dance shoes with proper support are a must, as you’ll be spending a significant amount of time on your feet. Pack clothing suitable for different dance styles and be prepared for theme nights and costume balls by bringing appropriate attire. Don’t forget to bring your dance accessories, such as dance shoes, dance belts, and hair accessories. In addition to competitions, cruise ships may organize selected dance showcases, where a group of dancers is chosen to perform in front of their fellow passengers. These showcases provide a platform for talented dancers to shine and share their artistry with a captive audience.

Dance Socials and Parties

How you perform throughout your contract may determine whether you are offered another automatically, but for some cruise lines, you will have to re-audition for your next contract. In any case, according to Kristen, there are “amazing performers who aren’t offered a contract because of behavioral issues” so it isn’t just about being a great dancer. If you have the necessary talent, temperament, and stamina and comport yourself professionally, you can go far. And once you are ready to move on, cruise line dance experience will serve you well in finding future performance work. There are also non-entertainment staff opportunities available - for example both Mary and Maria transitioned into jobs on the creative staff in the studio after working as dancers. Passengers can take spins around hardwoods to live music in the Palm Court on both Crystal ships, as well as in Crystal Serenity's Stardust lounge or Symphony's Starlite lounge.

Normally you will start on $3500 per month and your wage will increase every time you take a new contract to incentivise you to stay with the same company. As an artist it’s hard to find financial security in a dance job but a ship is a great way of doing that.

Celebrity Cruises have in the past partnered with the acclaimed dance company, the American Ballet Theatre, to bring guests the best classical dance experience at sea. These competitions are often judged by experienced dance professionals, adding an extra layer of excitement and prestige.

Join us on a wonderful 14 night adventure to the Canary Islands and Portugal! A ship that offers both exciting, novel experiences, as well as its much-loved signature venues. According to Wikipedia, the Rio Carnival draws record numbers of day tourists to Brazil - 2,2 million for the Carnival Day in 2012.

We welcome couples to join us and partake of the social dancing as much as they desire. Please be sure to read some of our testimonials from a few of our many satisfied guests. Enjoy 12 wonderful days and nights, departing from and returning to New York City. The Mardi Gras carnival aka "Carnival season" (the name literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French) is a Catholic festival celebrated in the countries of Anglican nations. The celebrations start on Epiphany (or "the feast day" on January 6th) and culminate on the day before Ash Wednesday (called "Fat Tuesday" and "Mardi Gras Day" - positioned exactly 46 days before Easter).

Add to this more than 5 million people for the whole week (around 70% of all annual guests to Rio De Janeiro), with over 400,000 foreigners participating in the week-long day and night music and dancing, and boozing. On select ships, Holland America transforms the Queens Lounge six nights out of seven into B.B King's Blues Club. An eight-piece band keeps the energy high with a mix of rock 'n' roll and R&B numbers sure to get you on your feet.

People travel alone for many reasons, and cruise lines have recognised this trend and have taken strides to ensure solo passengers enjoy their cruise as much as their fellow guests who may be accompanied. Single cabins have become more affordable and spacious, and there are planned activities on board to give those who wish for company, to make new friends. Ballroom and Latin dancing has enjoyed a resurgence lately following the phenomenal success of TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and The Greatest Dancer in the U.K. Many cruise lines still offer the chance to learn a few ballroom steps but some are more dance-centric than others. Read on to find out what you can expect if you want to shake your booty, trip the light fantastic or throw some shapes.

It is still possible to take dance lessons with your travel companion but full-blown dance sessions are, for now p, on hold. Some ships may still offer these out on deck - it’s easier to socially distance with this type of dancing. Until recently dancing on cruise ships had always been a popular activity, especially in the wake of Strictly with more and more of us taking to the dance floor as a fun way to keep fit, or just to let loose.

DA40 Series Airborne innovation

da40 cruise speed

I am surprised that the plane doesn’t sell at a more premium price given its overall top value. As for financials from 2013, maintenance was $12.05 per hour, including new tires. I perform my own oil changes and participate in the annual inspection. Repairs were $2500, or $11.85 per hour due to self-inflicted wheel pant damage. My advice is don’t land the airplane on runways that are poorly plowed.

The DA40's industry-leading safety record is the result of Diamond's commitment to protecting occupants with a vast array of both active and passive safety features. The Diamond DA40 is a reliable and efficient aircraft well-suited for various flight operations, including training, personal travel, and business aviation. The DA40 fully integrated G1000 NXi flight deck, incorporating the latest features with optional ultra-precise GFC700 Automatic Flight Control System, offers superior situational awareness, convenience and safety. Available equipment provides Traffic Advisories, Synthetic Vision Technology, Satellite WX and Entertainment, and more. On the other hand, if speed is the only item on your agenda, I suggest buying a different airplane and living with the trade-offs.

Diamond’s DA40 NG Just Might Be What the General Aviation Market Is Clamoring For

da40 cruise speed

Base price for the DA40 NG is around $430,000, versus $390,000 for the DA40 XLT when last Diamond offered it, while the well-equipped airplane I flew was slightly under $500,000. Max takeoff weight of the NG is higher than the XLT, at 2,888 pounds versus 2,646 pounds, for a useful load of a respectable 950 pounds. Takeoff and landing distance are a bit longer than in the gasoline version, though the book says the DA40 NG can get off the ground and climb to 50 feet using 1,936 feet of space, so that won’t be an issue for most buyers. The DA40 TUNDRA blends rugged backcountry versatility with excellent cross-country speed and lots of room for people and gear.

CEO Of The Cockpit: Master Of My Domain

It’s very roomy in the cockpit and the passengers are quite happy in the backseat. But one of the best features is the almost limitless view from the canopy. Just hold back on the stick until the runway reaches up and pulls you out of the air. With its long wing and relatively high aspect ratio—reflecting its sailplane heritage—the Star is a terrific climber, even when loaded. Moreover, it leads the league in short-field capability, easily hopping off the runway in 1200 feet or less with a heavy load. At 2535 pounds (2635 for newer models) gross, the Star is light; at 14 pounds per HP, its power loading puts it in the middle of its class.

Armstrong said there has never been an issue with aircraft scheduling since the program started. I was a member of DiamondShare in 2012 and 2013 in a new DA40 based at Caldwell Airport in New Jersey and can confirm it was a great experience, blending many of the benefits of owning a new airplane with none of the hassles.

I also like that the standby flight instruments are conveniently located at the top of the instrument panel. At annual, like any other airplane, we have a squawk list to deal with. To compare my DA40 to anything else in its class, upkeep is going to be less expensive for the most part. The upkeep on a newer airplane— particularly a composite—is a lot less than some may think. So far we have very few ADs to comply with compared to other manufacturers.

da40 cruise speed

It's also interesting to look at how high an airplane can fly because it gives you a good idea of how it will perform in different situations. In total between both types of cost, this data shows the average hourly cost to own and operate a Diamond DA40 NG is $200.11, but this also includes paying down the purchase loan. So you can use this number to get a rough estimate of the total cost depending on how much you plan on flying it. Don't worry, we're going to get into the nitty-gritty details and all of the technical stuff you could ever possibly want to know about the Diamond DA40 NG.

In her short time in the UK, she has been all over Europe, including down as far as Portugal, and has won many fans. Whether you're a newly certified pilot looking for the perfect first aircraft or an experienced IFR pilot with demanding taste, the DA40 NG with a jet fuel engine is the smart choice. Diamond’s industry-leading safety record is the result of our commitment to protecting you and your passengers with a long list of active and passive safety features. To summarize, I think the DA40 is an awesome aircraft that more pilots should consider.

Our aircraft was occasionally grounded until metric-sized aircraft hardware could be shipped from Canada. Of course, the reliable yet ancient-design Lycoming engine in the DA40 isn’t metric. I used to tell people we flew a George Jetson aircraft with a Fred Flintstone engine. Over the course of four years, we had our share of maintenance issues, but most were firewall-forward.

It is automatically controlled by the engine’s digital engine control through a conventional hydraulic governor. My goal was to buy a safe, practical and fun IFR aircraft to accommodate at least three adults, with low enough operating costs that my inner cheapskate would not inhibit flying. I’m very pleased to report that our first full year of DA40 ownership greatly exceeded my hopes. The purchase was a one-time gouge in our finances, but at this point it costs me less to fly for an hour than a trip to the hardware store costs. It’s safer than an hour driving on winding roads in our Mazda Miata—and way more fun.

Our DA40 NG are the ideal aircraft to take the IR training, either as a competency-based IR course or as full IR course. The DA40 offers the ultimate in handling, stability and control, ease of operation plus structural and system redundancies, all coupled with a high degree of crashworthiness. The DA40 NG comes standard with a choice of stylish and hard-wearing interior materials. The DA40 so-called powered glider, with its high-G-impact seat, give me confidence that I could put this plane down safely almost anywhere. I think the GFC700 autopilot and G1000 integration is excellent, and especially like the go-around switch on the throttle.

Since these prices are entirely dependent on how often you fly, the total cost will be different for everyone. That said, we can use a site like Aircraft Cost Calculator to get an idea of what the average person will spend. According to data for the Diamond DA40 CS (a close relative of the NG), the average annual variable costs of ownership are $66,600.00 for 450 hours' worth of flight time.

But the rest of the aircraft was essentially trouble-free, reflecting Diamond’s excellent build quality, fit and finish. The DA40 is very much a pilot’s airplane due to the outstanding visibility out the bubble canopy, combined with the feel of the stick and pushrod-controlled ailerons and elevators. The handling is very docile and forgiving with no bad habits, which made the plane ideal for us as relatively inexperienced pilots.

Our company, which carries out all heat treatment operations under one roof. Innovative CAE-system that performs a full cycle of engineering calculations, starting from building a computational mesh to the visualization of calculation results. IEC Infrared Systems (IEC) specializes in the design, development, and manufacture of thermal and infrared imaging surveillance systems for the defense industry.

The three-blade MT prop is very smooth and a lot quieter than a two-blade Hartzell. In my first year of ownership, nothing has broken, nothing has fallen apart and my airplane runs better than it did when I bought it. In early Stars, the baggage compartment was a bit of an afterthought, accessible only through the cabin by tilting the rear seats forward. This was later redesigned, and now the rear seats fold forward to essentially turn the backseat into one huge baggage bay. One of the Diamond DA40’s strongest suits is the fabulous visibility afforded by the wraparound canopy; nothing else in GA comes close.
